Chapter Fourteen
Killian
Frustrated was the only word that could describe my feelings at this point. I’d watched Greer stalk Megan repeatedly. His intentions were nothing but bad, and that’s why I kept him fixing the fences even though I needed him in the stables. Keeping Megan close to me protected her.
Trish made the rounds with everyone, so seeing her with Greer wasn’t a surprise. What drove me to violence were his words to Megan. She was no one’s sloppy seconds; she was everything good and sweet, and damn it, I was falling for her.
She stayed in her cabin for the rest of the day. The next morning, when I went to the stables, she had already started on the stalls. The horses were getting used to her, and she had listened well. She knew exactly which horses to put together, and which to keep apart.
She was at Lucky’s stall, and I’d be damned if the horse wasn’t nuzzling her neck like I’d done yesterday. Big stubborn bastard wouldn’t submit to me, but he was happy to move in on my girl. My girl?
“I see you found a new admirer.” She jumped at the sound of my voice, and it nearly eviscerated me to see the fear back in her eyes.
“He seems happier than he was a week ago.” She ran her hand up his muzzle and stepped away.
“He knows he’s safe.” I walked up to her slowly like I did with a skittish horse. “You know you’re safe, right?” I lifted my hand to cup her cheek, but she turned away from my touch. A crushing pain squeezed my heart. I’d never been emotional over a girl, but Megan did something to me that no other woman had. She made me feel.
“I only have a few more to go, and then I’ll be out of your way.” She picked up the rake and walked to the next stall.
“Megan, can we talk?” I leaned against Lucky’s stall. He turned around, giving me his horse’s ass view.
“There’s not much to say, Killian.” She picked up the half-full wheelbarrow and pushed toward the next stall.
“I disagree. I think there’s a lot to say.”
She put the wheelbarrow down and turned toward me. Gray shadows circled her eyes. Disappointment colored her face. Gone was the smile I loved, and in its place was the look of uncertainty. “Not now, okay? I’m tired and confused.”
I dropped my shoulders and nodded. “Let’s go, Lucky.” I pulled the big horse out of his stall and led him into the arena. He picked up on my mood and decided to give me a hard time. His message was loud and clear. He was as unhappy with me as Megan was. I couldn’t blame her. I’d scared the hell out of her. Her only experiences were with men who took from her and beat her. I would never be that man, and I’d prove it.
I worked with Lucky for several hours, casting glances over my shoulder in the vain hope that she had snuck up on me.
